ok just to let you know, i havent found any pidgin in the backports. You 
could get pidgin, but you have to download most/all of the required 
packages listed on the packages.ubuntu.com, so if you have lots of free 
time, you can install pidgin

but if you want to take an easy way out, stick with gaim until Gutsy is 
released or get the gutsy beta version
