There are plenty of howtos out there on how to install ubuntu as a
dual-boot with XP.
Here's the ubuntu one, and it references others:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
I recently worked out a new setup for my dual boot Vista/Ubuntu
system. I hit a gotcha that you (OP) may as well seeing as I
installed ubuntu on a second separate drive from the first (Vista). I
have 2 SATA drives in my box.
I usually haven't used a separate /boot partition for ubuntu, but this
time I needed to create a separate /boot partition on the first vista
system drive (hd(0)) otherwise the whole grub bootloader would fail --
no VIsta OR Ubuntu. Apparently this is a BIOS quirk that doesn't
allow bootloading from secondary drives... (methinks there should be
some warnings/logic about this possibility during the installation!!!)
I think the separate boot partition might be conventional wisdom for
experienced linux users but for noobs like me -- I had to learn the
hard way.
Also, if this is a setup that you foresee maintaining for awhile I
recommend reading some howtos on manual partitioning for dual-boot
systems (just google it). There are a few solid caveats that helped
me a lot and because you can't generally move partitions, planning can
be important.
Anywho, good luck with your install!
Cheers,
MC
