Problems running LinDVD - "Bad fd number"

Since I had earlier paid for a copy of Mandriva which includes LinDVD
I figured it was legal for me to see if I could get it working with
Ubuntu. I installed alien, converted the RPM file to deb, then
installed it, no major errors as far as I could see during the
installation other than security keys.

When I run LinDVD I get perfect sound etc, just no picture. When
running from the command line the output is:

"X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) 8
  Major opcode: 145
  Minor opcode: 3
  Resource id: 0x3800001
sh: Syntax error: Bad fd number"

A Google search for "Bad fd number" turns up some shell related issues
that I don't understand - Edgy uses dash instead of bash, which can
cause this problem.

1) Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
2) is the fd number issue related to my lack of video output?

I have yet to find a "free" DVD player for Linux that matches the
commercial version of WinDVD I use on my other system, and I would
sorely like to get LinDVD working.

Thanks

ED
