If you use Ubuntu, I would recommend starting with opening the System
menu and reading "Help and Support". It is well written and is
underappreciated. E.g., if you search for "DVD", you will find simple
instructions for how to get encrypted commercial DVDs to work.

If I was you I would stick to Ubuntu, not Kubuntu, at least until you
feel more comfortable. The GNOME user interface is certainly simpler
than KDE,and Ubuntu is in my experience more tested and better
integrated, with less glitches.
