Yes, I have exactly the same problem...

Most likely because as is clearly stated in the desktop effect dialog
box: "WARNING, this stuff is EXPERIMENTAL, use at your own risk etc
etc...", this is pretty clear to me ! ;o)

Like with any immature/buggy piece of sowtware... be patient, and wait
months or years, for the whole thing to mature.
The good news being, that Compiz and Beryl have just merged, therefore
reducing fragmentation and increasing development workforce. So this
will speed up development and bug fixing, so maybe, in 6 months for
Gutsy the next version of Ubuntu, well maybe it will work better.
Let's wait and see.
