Flash players, as used in your first link, are notorious for being
resource hogs. Unfortunately there's not much that can be done.
Do you experience the same slowdown when using google, yahoo, or
youtube videos? They also use flash players. It could just be that
sites player.
As for playing the wmv file, with the totem-gstreamer-plugin it should
give you play/pause controls at the bottom of the window.
