http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/utils/type1inst
make sure that you have the universe repository enabled

$ sudo apt-get install type1inst

After type1inst installs, go to the directory where you put your type1
fonts and

$ sudo type1inst

That will create the "fonts.scale" file.

Note: I put mine in /usr/share/fonts/type1 - makes it easy to remember
and find for future reference. You can also install the font viewer to
easily look at any of your fonts:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/gnome/gfontview

$ sudo apt-get install gfontview

For future reference, if you want to check to see if there is a package
for something you need, simply do a search via:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/
so in this case you'd have gone to that URL, entered type1 in the search
package Keyword box, entered dapper in the Distribution box and clicked
the Search button.
