Installing New Type 1 Font

I haven't found anything particularly useful on this, so I'm posing the
question here.  Can I just copy a Type 1 font into the fonts directory and
expect it to work?  Or do I need to use some special tool to add the new
font into the directory and/or configure the new font?

I'm running Dapper.
