Weird audil problem -- sound out of one or the other speaker, but not both

Folks,

I recently installed 6.06.1 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop
(1905-303S) and have run into a quirk with when playing mp3 or ogg
files (or any format for that matter). When I run xmms, the sound comes
out of the right built-in laptop speaker only. When I run Amarok, it's
left only. Adjusting the balance controls have no effect. Yet when I
use headphones or an outboard speaker system, I get stereo. Any thought
on how I might correct this to get simultaneous sound out of both
laptop speakers with one audio player?
