The MP3 file format has a problem in that it is restricted by Patents
(Fight software patents!).
This means it can't be included in Ubuntu by default or we couldn't
ship to places that have and enforce software patents.
To enable MP3 playback read: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
also includes details for other proprietary and patented formats.
I would personally recommend using Ogg Vorbis instead of MP3, it does
the same thing, it is technically superior and its not restricted by
patents.
Default player in Ubuntu is Totem for media, Rythmbox does music
management, its got a library thing to find your music if you have a
load of ripped CDs or downloaded music.
I personally like XMMS.
Welcome to Ubuntu, it really is a nice place!!!
