Thanks for the tip, I'll see what vlc has to offer. I've tried
gstreamer, ffmpeg, and mencoder. None have quite got it right (sound
ends up out of sync or the program bails on some part of the format). I
did discover that the AVI format doesn't support AAC audio streams, so
that at least does need to be transcoded to mp3.
