How do I upgrade Xubuntu?

Hi there,
I'm running Xubuntu Dapper, which I'm actually quite happy about,
BUT ... I'd like to be able to upgrade to Edgy.
So I went to the Xubuntu.org home page and saw that upgrade using
the update-manager doesn't work and one should use the apt-get
dist-upgrade method instead.
Great, so I did! - and this broke completely.
What happened? Well, this: Apparently, Edgy is using a new version
of libc (2.4), and some packages on dapper require 2.3 or less.
So Edgy wants to replace libc - which it can't, because there are
packages depending on a previous version.
AND it wants to replace some of these packages, which it can't - because
they need the new libc which can't be installed. A Catch-22!
After this attempt, the system won't boot and the only way to get going
is to boot with a Debian install floppy (there's no CD drive on
my computer) and reinstall - Dapper, since the floppy install
procedure won't work for Edgy.
I also tried doing the upgrade with a very basic install with just the
kernel and a few tools (and no X server) installed, but the same problem
arises. Anybody knows how to get around this?
(I'm not really keen on experimenting and I'm actually quite happy about
the dapper installation, but I'd like to get Firefox 2.0 going and to
get the other improvements in Edgy).
thanks in advance for any suggestion,
Carsten
