Making Cisco VPN 4.8 code

Hi. I guess the old Grey cells are fading. I have seen the docs on 
popey.com and have used that as a template. It works fine with the 
x86_64 version, but on my laptop i get:

  MODPOST
/bin/sh: scripts/mod/modpost: No such file or directory

make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2

Failed to make module "cisco_ipsec.ko".


This is a new install of 6.06.01. I install build-essential and 
kernel-headers appropriate for the kernel (2.6.15-27-386). There is no 
MODPOST executable in 'scripts/mos/modpost' but there is .c and .h files.

What am I missing/doing wrong? Is there something else to install or run 
first?
