Why not try the alternatives? On my system, I found these:
$ apt-cache search dvd author
cdlabelgen - generates front cards and tray cards for CDs and DVDs
dvd+rw-tools - DVD+-RW/R tools
dvdauthor - create DVD-Video file system
gopchop - Fast, lossless cuts-only editor for MPEG2 video files
totem - A simple media player for the Gnome desktop (dummy package)
totem-gstreamer - A simple media player for the Gnome desktop based on
gstreamer
totem-xine - A simple media player for the Gnome desktop based on xine
dvdstyler - a crossplatform DVD Authoring System
k9copy - copy DVD like dvdshrink
lxdvdrip - tool to make a copy from a Video DVD
qdvdauthor - GUI frontend for dvdauthor and other related tools
submux-dvd - subtitle multiplexer, muxes subtitles into .vob
