Of course you can't edit the files for the live CD - I was silly
suggesting that solution.

Do you have windows on this machine? I think the block which the install
is talking about is on your harddrive. Maybe you could run a disk
checking tool like checkdisk in windows - to make sure the harddrive is
healthy.
