Now I have tried the Alternate Edgy CD. Everything goes fine until the
stage "Select and install software" which fails at 6%. Doing ctrl+alt+F4 to
see what happens I get the following:

in-target: yelp zenity zip
kernel: [17180095.216000] sr 1:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x8000002
kernel: [17180095.216000] sr0: Current: sense key: Hardware Error
kernel: [17180095.216000] Additional sense: Timeout on logical unit
kernel: [17180095.216000] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 148636
kernel: [17180095.216000] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block
37159
in-target: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 6.10 _Edgy Eft_ - Release i386 (
20061025.1)]/pool/main/d/diveintopython/diveintopython_5.4-2ubuntu1_all.deb
MD5Sum mismatch

This happens every time, with exactly the same sector and logical block. So
I thought about a defective CD and burnt another one, only to see the same
message with the same numbers. Yes, I have checked the integrity of both
CDs and even the .iso file.

   Any ideas?
