Automatic mount of USB key

Hi all,
I'm facing a problem that I'm not able to solve,
if I plug my USB key it's automatically mounted, no problem at all.
But if plug the key while I'm running my vanilla kernel (almost daily
updated with git/cogito) the key is not automatically mounted.

There no difference in /var/log/messages between a ubuntu or vanilla
kernel and I don't understand HOW the automatical mount works...

Any hint on how to pinpoint the problem?
