I believe you are looking to 'Empty Trash'.  You can do this by right
clicking on the trash folder.  This should work as you expect it to. 
Also, there is an option to empty the trash on exit in the Accounts
dialog.  Also, you might want to check the Expunge Inbox option there as
well.
