Why do you need to login to Gnome as root? Don't.

You don't need to login to Gnome as root to do that. Login as a regular 
user, then go to System > Administration > Networking and Ubuntu will 
ask you for a password.

No. And don't login to Gnome as root.

You could run 'network-admin' from the command line, but like I said 
that's not necessary. If you go to System > Administration > Networking 
as a regular user Ubuntu will ask you for a password.
