I've found it useful to do so on occasion. I have my /home partition as
an encrypted loopfs. Every now and then I like to back it up, which
means unmounting/unlooping, which means I need to login without /home.
It's much easier to simply login as root to X than go through the hassle
of changing the runlevel and rebooting...
Then there was my earlier problem where the clock was an hour and a half
off and sudo ceased to function until I either waited a couple of hours
or reboot the system...
There are most definitely valid reasons for taking the more tradition
root user method...
