Hi Marius,
Thanks for your help, I have solved the problem (see my followup email
later last friday). Simple dpkg-reconfigure did not solve the issue,
it would still leave it unconfigured, because the tetex-base
configuration would stop, with a message "! TeX capacity exceeded,
sorry [pattern memory=262143]."
I finally purged all tetex and tex-common, and removed manually some
extra config files, and did a clean reinstall. That solved it.
