It was never a dapper/usb/power issue. My ipod's hard drive is bad. I
had used dosfsck to check the ipod and it reported no errors, however
when I tried to do a sector checked the process hang again.
I decided to plug in the ipod on another computer with win xp, that runs
another ipod and attempted to copy stuff from it: Result... the process
hangs! I also found that apple includes some hidden diagnostics tools in
the ipod's software, and sure enough, the disc check fails.
Apparently, my ipod just started failing at the same time that I
switched to dapper. I never notices because the ipod fails gracefully
when listening to music and just skips to the next song, which I
wouldn't notice most of the time since I use it for background music
while I work.
Anyway, I am off to ipod/apple land to see what can be done about this.
The ipod works fine, except for those songs that don't, but I can't
connect it to the computer to add new music.
Thanks a lot to everyone for the help and guidance. I guess that on the
bright side, I did learn how to build a custom kernel and got my usb hub
working correctly.
