"required" - for what?

To install additional programs, you can use either gnome-app-install
(which you find in the Applications menu) or synaptic (System -> 
Administration).

You can do this from synaptic or, quite easier, by modifying the
file /etc/apt/sources.list with a text editor).

> installing the latest packages 

You can do so in synaptic.
