You can go to the menu Applications on the top toolbar. At the bottom is
an entry "Add/Remove ...". This is the simplest tool to install
individual applications.

Or got the the menu System/Administration and start Synaptic package
manager. This is a more advanced tool that gives you full control over
your packages. You can enable/disable repositories by going to the
Settings menu inside Synaptic, or, equivalently, by opening
System/Administration/Software Properties.

Another option is to use a terminal and command line tools. You can open
a terminal and type "aptitude [enter]", which will bring up a full
screen text application inside the terminal. Or you can use individual
aptitude commands on the command line. 
To edit the repositories without one of the graphic tools above, edit
the file /etc/apt/sources.list.
