Greetings Karl,
Having used Linux for some years now - starting with Mandrake, then Debian
and now Ubuntu, umpteen installs and newbie catastrophes, I have to say that
when I downloaded and burnt athe Ubuntu Dapper CD, installing it was a
breeze. I would not like to have someone else install my OS. So many
messages need to be digested, and especially when it comes to accessing the
network, email and office suite - they are just so essential for my computer
usage.
Evolution - I am about to remove it as I find the issues surrounding junk
mail and controllability just too illconceived - opting for mutt (which I
recommend you do NOT look at - unless you like headaches) ... bottom line
for evolution though is that it works just fine for ordinary use. You need
to know precisely your settings, passwords and so on. Configuring the first
test email can be a pain if your are tapping blindly for passwords once
received and installed, but long forgotten.
May I suggest you install Ubuntu as a dual-boot solution, and keep trying it
until you have the configuration sorted. Once you have, then you will learn
that the configurations have not yet begun - so many other things to be
installed just to "try them out" and it will not be long before you have to
seriously work on the base system again. Please do that - it will teach you
a lot about Linux.
All the best
Brian
