Sure. It's working fine here with xine-ui and totem (with totem-xine backend).
You may need to edit ~/.xine/config and ~/.gnome2/totem_config manually
(search for "subtitle"). (I don't remember exactly how I did it. It was a
long time ago back when I was still using Gentoo and I simply used the same
configs in my home directory when switching to Ubuntu.)
