DivX playback with external subtitle files (.srt)

Under Fedora, both xine (xine-ui) and gmplayer automatically load the
corresponding .srt file when you open the .avi and display the subtitles
accordingly. I've yet to get this to work under Ubuntu with either gxine,
gmplayer, vlc, or any other media player. Anyone else had any luck with
this?
