Been there, done that, got fed up waiting for endless compile to
complete just to get a 0.3% speedup that for most people means they
can read their e-mail at exactly the same speed as before.
By all means (and I have done so in the past) go the gentoo way if you
have time to burn and no work (i.e. better things) to get on with. The
ones here that does have work to get on with appreciates the
pre-compiled stuff. Besides, why go to gentoo if you want to compile
all from source, Ubuntu will let you do that as well, for all 17,000+
packages...
