Alternatives to ubuntu?

Have you tried tuning firefox?  

Have you got some network problem especially ipv6 stuff leaves network
dependant apps waiting ..

personally i find firefox ion Ubuntu perfectly acceptable.  I tried
early firefox and dumped it sticking to Opera for a long time because
of performance probs but since firefox 1.0 I have found it fast enough
...



this rather makes me think something is amis with your install
somewhere ...
