Suspend and Hibernate not working on Dapper

Hello all,

I've used ubuntu breezy on my Sony VAIO laptop for months.
Most things worked fine and I was very happy with it.

Recently, I installed the ubuntu dapper flight 4 to the laptop.
I properly installed if following the instructions and boot into the
system. I tested serveral things on it and found the "hibernate"
and "suspend" function didn't work.

*Hibernate*
When I presses the hibernate button on the logout menu, the
laptop screen goes dark but the back light is still on. Then the
machine hangs at the situation for long time (say 5 minutes)
and give not respond to me

*Suspend*
When I presses the suspend button on the logout menu, the
laptop goes down normally with the power light flashing (same
as suspend on M$ Windows). But when I switched it back
on, the screen goes dark with the backlight after GRUB.
It will then hangs.

Does any one have the same experience?
Is this because HAL does not support my laptop?
What should I do?
