Firefox & Thunderbird stopped working [SOLVED].

Not sure if you are aware of that but,

if you go to .mozilla (.firefox, whatever the distro has as default)  
you will find a directory that is randomely named. It should make it  
harder for people to find your profile and temper with it. I fixed it  
once nearly the same way you did (about 1.5 years ago so this may not  
apply any more) by doing the same _plus_ renaming the arbitrary named  
directory to the new one so that firefox found the old data in the  
"new" directory. (hope that's somehow clear what I mean)

in my experience the profiles sometimes get screwed up for no obvious  
reason (bad plugins?)
