Stopping nautilus managing the desktop

Nautilus has a show stopper bug

which basically prevents me from moving and deleting certain files.


As such I would like to switch to using Thunar.


This page shows how to change the places links

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nonautilusplease

but the desktop still seems to be managed by nautilus.

Anyone know if its possible to change this?
