laptop battery

I have a Compaq Presario laptop I think the number is either a 140 or 
240, possibly a 140 from what I can recall my sister telling me although 
it was a while ago when she might have told me.
For some reason the battery doesn't last that long even when I have it 
on charge for hours.
Is it me running Orca with Festival or the fact I keep my wireless 
network enabled which is making the battery last so little time or is it 
something else?
