Can't print anything!

Did CUPS get broken in the last update?

I was able to print a few days ago but after the update I'm unable to 
print anything. I'm working on the problem but no luck.

Here's what happens

   1. run the gnome print tool and it can't find my printer ( parallel
      port )
   2. try to cat something to /dev/lp0 and I don't get anything

Using cat to test lp0 and the printer should do something. Even if it 
sends the printer junk at least I know it's connected and talking to the 
system.

I don't care who broke what. I just want this fixed so I can print.
