Open a console and type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".  You will
be given lots of options, choosing the defaults is probably the best way
to go until you get to the choice of screen resolutions.  At that point,
use the arrow keys to find and the space bar to select the resolution
you want (and in my opinion, unchecking the ones you DON'T want).  This
should get you going.
