On most of the earlier distros I used to use my USR modem was found on
ttyS4, but then for some reason a few find it on ttyS14! Don't know if
that helps or not... there is a command you can run that basically
tells what hardware is found where, but I can't remember what that is!

I've only been toying with linux since the beginning of 2004, off and
on, but now am a complete convert. Originally was very satisifed with
Fedora, but since moving to Ubuntu am even more satisfied.
Don't give up... I searched and asked around for an issue I had
getting a TV tuner card to work in Linux. Month after month so
solution. Then one day someone saw my question, answered it, and it
was the simplest solution, and it works great!
