Hi Duncan
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop brings back all packages u lost.
That's the risk to use unofficial backports.
Please ask the inofficial ubuntu-backports maintainer, to open up a
support channel for their mistakes.
Cause providing packages without QA and support (cause firefox is a main
package so there is a type of QA) is ridiculus.
