Solved:
- - I had to install the keyboard layout named German (no extra
description).
- - After removing the old layout (nodeadkeys) GNOME didn't complain
anymore about the settings deamon restarting way to often.
- - In emacs and thunderbird and probable other appications I can now
access all special keys as described in
http://www.ubuntuusers.de/wiki/treiber:tastatur:sonderzeichen
- - In the gnome-terminal I can only access a subset of the special
characters like é an è but no ?

Regards
Niki
