The most generally useful guide I've found is here:

It's for Debian Sarge, not Ubuntu, and also covers integrating Samba
with OpenLDAP.  I like their approach, using phpldapadmin for creating
and managing user, group and machine accounts.  I'm fairly sure that
this guide should work with Ubuntu without modification.  Just skip
the Samba parts, and you should be all set.
