Looks like the permissions are all ok, but my xorg contains:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "us" <<<<< the big difference, I presume?
EndSection
