This has been happening to a certain extent with Linux servers for a long
time, since companies buy servers to run Linux on;  and the manufactuer
misses out on a potential sale if the machine doesn't work perfectly with
Linux out-of-the-box.

An extreme version of this is for cluster-environments;  where a machine has
to run not only Linux but LinuxBIOS (Linux as the boot-loader), otherwise
there isn't going to be a sale.

However, with Laptops/Desktops, it's only beginning to work that way.  
But... you may have noticed various annoucements to do with HP, their
laptops and Ubuntu:
