Four Ubuntu Installations -- ALL FAIL

Ok, I'm going to reply to this thread because it's already been started
& at least Bob did a much better job at describing the problem than I
could. Maybe I can get the topic back on track some...I liked that
article. Very true. But I'm still a linux complete newbie switching
from Windows!

Reason I'm restarting this is because I'm having the EXACT same
problem, to the "T", same exact machine just out of the box. Only thing
different is that I installed a second hard drive to be used just for
Linux. The idea of shrinking a Windows partition is ...uh, creepy to
me. Anyway, I'm a complete newbie and I don't expect Linux to be
Windows. Hopefully it won't! My goal is to get thinking outside the
windows "box", to get something useable installed so I can play with
Apache server, and PHP, and get used to administering server stuff
before I switch my Web site to a dedicated server. Plus, I just want to
learn more about Linux in general and I support the idea of free/open
source software anyway.

SO...the only suggestion I saw for a fix in this thread so far was to
"try using the noapic boot option". How do I do this? Also, what is
"AIPC" and what happens if I run without it?

To add some more info, I tried disabling AIPC within the BIOS. That let
me complete the installation, but when I tried to go back into Windows
it failed. No problem - turned it back on, and now I can boot into
windows...but when I try to boot into Ubuntu, the nice, blue logo
screen comes up but the whole system hangs after a few seconds. Haven't
tried turning AIPC back off again in the BIOS and launching again, but
should I?

Sounds like a hardware issue to me, but I really don't know. I can get
to the command line fine by booting into "Recovery Mode" but I don't
know what to do from there. Is there some way to configure hardware,
from there, or is that barking up the wrong tree? Also, heh...how do I
launch the GUI from the command line? (See, really am a newbie!)

Thanks for any help!
