Owner and permissions of /var/mail/me

chmod 0660 /var/mail/carthik

This didn't fix it : echo test | mail carthik as well as sending a mail to 
"carthik" from mutt did not show the mail in the newly created (by me) 
/var/mail/carthik... 

am i trying to send mail to myself the wrong way, is there something obvious 
i am missing - and how do i get ubuntu to send carthik an email, heck any 
email, just for testing?

Where are the logs for mails that are send/received and i am not talking 
about mails from outside the machine...?

This is getting curioser and curioser...
