I don't believe there is a limit, but of course the more files you have
in a directory the slower it will be to do any kind of listing (browse /
ls, etc) in that directory which will slow programs down that use the
directory.  Also some Unix commands may not work on a large number of
files (mainly where you may use a * for a wildcard, etc).
