But this isn't just a problem with Linux . . . some cameras are not even 
correctly installed by Windows, even today, without the need for extra 
software/drivers. This is true to a greater or lesser extent for all 
Operating Systems. Maybe you are just unlucky with that particular 
model?  My Canon E300D and two Sony Cybershot cameras work fine . . .
