I'd agree with that, but suggest looking at Pocket Linux before Linux
From Scratch (LFS).Pocket Linux
( http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Pocket-Linux-Guide/html/index.html ) allows
you to build a tiny but working Linux on a couple of floppy discs, all
from source code. It is very well documented and you can learn a lot
about how systems work and are put together in just a few hours. (I
went through the first two-thirds of it while immobilised with a bad
back last Christmas...)
You are guaranteed to learn, and because it is all on a couple of
floppies you can do it without messing up your working system. That
experience will serve you well when you go on to LFS.

link above to the one that I mean.
