Today i came across the same problem and i´ver followed your instructions.

if i do this it also removes kubuntu-desktop. Which lead in a bunch of
removed packages during next upgrade if you use aptitude instead of apt-get.

(sory I use german localisation)

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge kubuntu-artwork-usplash

Now, is there a possibility to use ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop AND
aptitude at the same time, without kubuntu-usplash?

Maybe s.th. like

sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash

where you can choose the splash would be good!??

bye Thilo

PS. I also have tried this tin-of-oil trick, but now my keyboard feels a
    little slippery.
    SCNR  ;)
