I get very similar results to norman silverstone with a small window
fps of about 1400 and maximised down to as low as 70fps.

Before doing a dpkg-reconfigure xserver xorg yesterday I had frame
rates of only about 90 even when glxgears was small. At that time I
tried to run foobillard (a pool & snooker game) and couldn't get it to
run sensibly at all. This all followed an attempt to install fglrx
drivers from synaptic which went horribly wrong. Before trying to add
fglrx I had the ati driver shown in xorg.conf and all seemed OK, so the
fglrx seems to be the culprit. I had even seriously considered
reformatting and reinstalling Breezy this morning but it looks as
though I can play the waiting game for the moment and keep my fingers
crossed that everything continues as it is now. I'm not a real game
player as you can probably see from the game mentioned above and the
frame rate I'm getting now is OK for me.

The moral of this story? Be careful with installs of the fglrx driver.
