nVidia with stock kernel crashes when leaving X

I have been playing around with this some more.  This is the hardest 
crash I have ever experienced with the Linux kernel.  There is nothing 
logged and Alt-SysRq magic doesn't respond at all.  I can't figure out 
how to trace what is happening.
