this might save you
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
it will ask a few questions, but usually has the correct defaults. should get you back to roughly where you started.

ps, its good practice to do
sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.old
before messing with an important file.
and also comment all the changes you make in a file, i do
#changed by sam, to do this, see http://where-i-got-any-info-on-the-change.org/
